  • Pingtung offers some terrific viewing spots for open-sky viewing which are ideal for “moon gazing”: (i.) Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area (大鵬灣): The open, flat landscapes around the lagoon & the bridge provide unobstructed horizons; (ii.) Kenting National Park (墾丁國家公園) offers incredibly dark skies situated far away from light pollution; and (iii.) Kao-Ping River Riverside Park (高屏溪河濱公園) is a vast, open expanse perfect for watching the lunar disk rise above the eastern horizon.

  • Pingtung County is a diverse region offering coastal scenery, cultural experiences, natural landscapes & island adventures.

  • Natural & Coastal Highlights: (i.) Kenting National Park is Taiwan’s most famous beach & seaside destination, known for white-sand beaches, clear waters, surfing, snorkeling & lively coastal towns; (ii.) Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area is a beautiful lagoon with wetlands, cycling paths & great sunset views; (iii.) Maobitou Park (貓鼻頭公園) is a scenic cape shaped like a cat’s nose with coastal trails, wildlife spotting & panoramic ocean views at the western entrance to Kenting; (iv.) Liuqiu Island (小琉球) is accessible by ferry from Donggang. This coral island is popular for snorkeling, diving & tidepool exploration. (v.) Baisha Port is the main ferry port with vibrant marine activity & tour boats; and (vi.) Lobster Cave (龍蝦洞) is an interesting coral limestone cave exposed at low tide.

  • Lakes & Water Areas: Longluan Lake is the largest freshwater lake in southern Taiwan. The area around Longluan Lake is great for: (i,) bird-watching, especially for migratory birds; (ii,) cycling; and (iii,) truly serene nature walks.

  • Cultural & Historical Attractions: (i.) Liudui Hakka Cultural Park (六堆客家文化園區) is a large park with exhibitions on Hakka culture, gardens, trails & traditional architecture; (ii.) Museum of Traditional Theater (屏東戲曲故事館). Located in a restored historic building in Chaozhou, this museum focuses on Taiwanese opera & puppet theater; (iii.) Chaozhou Old Street is a historic shopping street with traditional shops, temples, and snacks; (iv.) Pingtung Confucius Temple & Pingtung Art Museum in Pingtung City has exhibits of history & art; and (v.) Wanchin Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is Taiwan’s oldest preserved Catholic basilica.

  • Indigenous Culture & Mountain Villages: (i) Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park. A large outdoor cultural park sharing rich traditions, performances, and reconstructed tribal homes of Taiwan’s indigenous groups; (ii) Wutai Village (Rukai community). A mountain village known for its unique slate architecture, indigenous culture, and scenic surroundings.

  • Outdoor & Nature Activities: (i) Waterfalls & Forests. Pingtung’s mountainous east side offers hidden natural gems like Dajin Waterfall, Wutan Waterfall, and forest recreation areas with trails and waterfalls. (ii) Houbihu Fishing Port. On the Hengchun Peninsula, this vibrant fishing port is great for fresh seafood and water sports like snorkeling or sailing.

  • Local Highlights & Food: (i) Donggang Fishery Port & Huaqiao Market: Famous for fresh bluefin tuna and seafood, especially during the Bluefin Tuna Cultural Festival in summer. (ii) Night Markets & Old Streets: Pingtung Night Market and historic local streets offer excellent local snacks and atmosphere. (iii) Coastal & Beach Fun: Kenting and Dapeng Bay are must-visit for sea lovers. (iv) Culture & History: Explore Hakka and indigenous parks, old temples, and museums. (v) Nature & Wildlife: Bird watching, waterfalls, and mountain villages offer scenic escapes.
