  • There are no commercial airlines operating passenger flights out of Pingtung Airport (PIF) in Pingtung, Taiwan. Commercial flights completely ceased in August 2011, largely due to the opening of the Taiwan High Speed Rail. Persons wishing to fly into or out from the Pingtung area can use Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), which is the nearest major airport & is located just about 26 km. (16 miles) from the center of Pingtung. Major airlines operating out of the nearby Kaohsiung airport include: (i.) China Airlines; (ii.) EVA Air; (iii.) STARLUX Airlines; (iv.) Tigerair Taiwan: (v.) Cathay Pacific; and (vi.) United Airlines which has initiated a daily nonstop daily service to KHH from Tokyo / Narita Airport.

  • Pingtung County has one main military airfield & one rarely-used commercial airport. Most travelers heading to Pingtung or Kenting National Park fly into the nearest major international hub, Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), located about 26 km. (16 miles) from Pingtung.

  • The airports & airfields located within Pingtung County include: (i) Pingtung Airport & Pingtung Air Force Base (PIF / RCDC) located in Pingtung City & consisting of “North” & “South” Airfields. It is primarily an active Republic of China Air Force base; (ii) Hengchun Airport (HCN / RCKW) located in Hengchun Township near Kenting National Park. It is Taiwan’s southernmost airport.

  • Closest Major Airport for Travelers: Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) od located about 26 km (16 miles) from Pingtung City. It serves as the main gateway to southern Taiwan. From KHH, it takes approximately 50 minutes to reach Pingtung by taking the Kaohsiung MRT to Zuoying Station and then a TRA train.

  • Pingtung lies at the southern tip of Taiwan & forms the island’s southernmost administrative region. Its geography is notable for a mix of broad tropical plains, river valleys, mountains & coastal landscapes along two different seas. This geographic variability strongly shapes the agriculture, towns & culture of Pingtung. The combination of fertile plains, rugged mountains, coral peninsulas & tropical coasts makes Pingtung one of Taiwan’s most agriculturally productive & ecologically diverse regions.

  • Major Landforms: (i.) “Pingtung Plain” which dominates the western half of the county. It is one of Taiwan’s largest agricultural plains & contains very fertile soil used for rice, sugarcane, bananas & tropical fruits. This plain is where most cities & towns are located, including Pingtung City; (ii.) “Central Mountain Range” which rises sharply in the eastern part of Pingtung. There are steep forested mountains with elevations often above 2,000–3,000 meters that are home to communities of indigenous Paiwan & Rukai Peoples. A notable peak in this region is Mount Beidawu, one of southern Taiwan’s tallest mountains; (iii.) “Hengchun Peninsula” which forms the southernmost part of Pingtung. The “Hengchun Peninsula” has a Coral Limestone terrain, tropical climate & windy conditions year-round. The “Hengchun Peninsula” is home to Kenting National Park which is a major tourism area.

  • Rivers & Water Systems: Several important rivers flow through Pingtung bringing sediment from the mountains & helping to maintain the fertile soils of the western coastal plain: (i.) Gaoping River is the largest river in southern Taiwan & a key boundary between Pingtung & neighboring Kaohsiung; (ii.) Donggang River flows into the sea near the fishing town of Donggang; (iii.) Linbian River originates in the Central Mountain Range & flows into the Taiwan Strait. Its lower alluvial plain is a major natural resource for agriculture & aquaculture & famously supports the area known for cultivating “Black Pearl” wax apples.

  • Coastal Zone Geography: Pingtung has two coastlines which are distinctive from each other: (i.) the West Coast borders the Taiwan Straits & supports mudflats, fishing ports, aquaculture & oyster farming towns such as Donggang; (ii.) the South & East Coast border the Western Pacific Ocean & boasts rocky cliffs, coral reefs, clear water & beaches that are popular for diving & tourism. The noted marine park Kenting National Park lies in the south & functions to protect coral reefs, tropical forests & coastal ecosystems.

  • Pingtung County administers several islands: (i.)” Xiaoliuqiu” (Liuqiu Island) is a coral island west of Donggang known for sea turtles & snorkeling; (ii.) “Dongsha Islands Remote Coral Atoll” in the South China Sea is protected within the “Dongsha Atoll National Park”.

  • Pingtung County has 14 active train stations run by the Taiwan Railway Corporation (TRA). They sit along the scenic Pingtung Line and the South-Link Line, linking the tropical south to the rest of Taiwan.

  • Major Hub Stations: (i) “Pingtung Station” is situated in Pingtung City & is the busiest hub in the county. It features a modern elevated design with a built-in shopping center & a Visitor Information Center; (ii) “Chaozhou Station” is located in Chaozhou Township & is a major transit terminal where many western coastal trains end their runs. It is a spacious station equipped with convenient bike repair stations & cozy reading areas for travelers; (iii) “Fangliao Station” is the gateway to Kenting National Park & the starting point of the South-Link Line. Travelers frequently step off the train here to catch direct coastal buses heading further south.

  • Stations on the Pingtung Line: Trains travel from north to south through these local & express stops: (i.) “Liukuaicuo” is a quiet, unstaffed local station. It is the future planned site for the highly anticipated High-Speed Rail (HSR) extension into Pingtung; (ii.) “Guilai” is a small local station serving commuter traffic; (iii.) “Linluo” is an elevated countryside station right near Provincial Highway 1; (iv.) “Xishi” is a peaceful stop close to local historical landmarks; (v.) “Zhutian” is famous for its well-preserved, historic wooden Japanese-era station building located right next to the new elevated tracks; (vi.) “Kanding” is a tiny rural stop that only serves local commuter trains; (vii.) “Nanzhou” is a bustling township station popular with visitors exploring local sugar factory grounds; (viii.) “Zhen’an” is a quiet rural station that primarily connects local farming villages; (ix.) “Linbian” is known for its nearby seafood markets & elevated tracks designed to prevent coastal flooding; (x.) “Jiadong” is a station rich in Hakka cultural history & old traditional architecture; and (xi.) “Donghai” is a quiet, single-track local community stop.

  • The Southernmost Edge: “Fangshan Station” is the most southern train station in Taiwan. It is tucked onto a hillside and offers stunning panoramic views of the ocean but the station is only visited by a couple of local trains each day.
