FENG SHUI – 風 水

Feng Shui in the culture of Tainan
( bluemountainfengshui.com )

  • Feng Shui in Taiwan
  • 臺灣文化中風水的角色

  • Feng Shui, literally “wind and water,” is a Chinese metaphysical system that seeks to harmonize human dwellings and spaces with natural and spiritual forces. Feng Shui pratice is the ancient Chinese art of arranging physical space to harmonize with the natural environment & enhance “qi” (氣), or life energy. Feng shui considers orientation, geography, water, wind & spatial arrangement in order to bring prosperity, health & protection. In Taiwan, Feng Shui principles appear in: (i.) Temple placement & orientation; (ii.) Village layout; (iii.) Residential home design; and (iv.) Tomb & ancestral shrine placement

  • Temples in Taiwan are often sited based on Feng Shui principles: (i) facing water (symbolizing wealth) or mountains (symbolizing protection); (ii) backed by hills, open in the front, flanked by structures (known as “green dragon” and “white tiger” sides). Temples were laid out to control & direct spiritual energies. In coastal areas, temples were built facing the sea for protection & spiritual alignment.

  • Traditional Residences & Sanheyuan (三合院), common in rural Tainan, also follow strict Feng Shui principles. Orientation is often south-facing to catch favorable winds & sunlight. The Courtyard encourages smooth “qi” flow. Mountains or trees behind the home offer symbolic support. Ancestor halls in these homes are oriented along the central axis, reflecting cosmic balance.

  • Grave Sites & Feng Shui (Yin Feng Shui / 陰宅風水): Burial grounds in Taiwan, especially in more rural areas are selected using Yin Feng Shui. Optimal landforms like “Dragon Veins” (龍脈) or auspicious hillsides are chosen to bring fortune to descendants. Many families consult Feng Shui masters to choose a precise burial date, direction & layout.

  • Feng Shui in Agriculture & Village Planning: In historical Taiwan, villages & irrigation systems were often planned with Feng Shui in mind. Irrigation ditches known as the “Guoshui systems”, were believed to channel not only water but also “qi”. Protective groves, village walls, & even communal wells were placed for energy balance & community protection.

  • Role of Feng Shui Masters: Traditional Feng Shui masters (風水師) are still consulted today for: (i) Choosing house sites or remodeling homes; (ii) Selecting burial locations & tomb orientation; and (iii) Evaluating temple construction. They use a luopan compass (羅盤) and ancient texts like the I Ching (易經).

SHOPPING – 購 屋

Shopping in Taipei

  • Shopping in Taiwan
  • 臺灣文化中購屋的角色
  • Taiwan offers a dynamic shopping mix ranging from ultra-modern luxury malls to bargain-packed wholesale markets & lively night markets.
  • Before foreign guests visit a traditonal public market anywhere on the Island of Taiwan it is important to understand the differences between the various types of markets in the culture of Taiwan: (i.) The “Morning Market” – the purpose is “daily life”. People go because they need vegetables, meat, fish, breakfast & household necessities. The “Morning Market” is arguably more revealing of ordinary household life; (ii.) The “Evening Market” – the purpose is “shopping after work”. Shoppers are usually seeking a mixture of: groceries, prepared foods, dinner & household goods; and (iii) The “Night Market” – the purpose is “food + entertainment + shopping”. The “Night Market” is much more likely to be: snack-oriented, recreational, tourist-oriented, crowded with younger people & associated with games & entertainment.
  • The basic rhythm: (i.) A typical morning market begins very early; 3–5 AM: wholesalers & vendors begin receiving and sorting goods; (ii.) 5–6 AM: stalls open; serious shoppers & restaurant buyers appear; (iii.) 6–9 AM: the market is at its liveliest; (iv.) 9–11 AM: still active, but gradually winding down; (v.) 11 AM–early afternoon: many traditional morning markets begin to close for the day.
  • Taiwan traditional markets are commonly called “菜市場” (“cài shìchǎng”), literally “vegetable market,” or more colloquially “菜市仔” (“tshài-tshī-á”) in Taiwanese Hokkien. These markets may be permanent indoor markets, covered markets or collections of temporary street stalls. Taiwan has hundreds of traditional markets & thousands of individual stalls. They have historically served as neighborhood food-supply systems as much as shopping destinations.
  • In earlier times the markets often developed around temples, streets & neighborhood commercial centers. People historically went to temples early in the morning to worship & then bought fruit & vegetables from vendors nearby. More-formal markets eventeually developed around these patterns & activities.
  • The “agricultural calendar” can be understood by walking through a Taiwan market. What appears in abundance changes with: temperature, rainfall, growing season, regional agriculture, holidays, festivals & traditional foods. There is also a regional dimension. A vegetable or food may have one name or cultural association in northern Taiwan & something different in the south: Tainan, Kaohsiung or Pingtung. That makes the market a surprisingly good place to study regional culture on the Island of Taiwan.
  • Top Shopping Districts & Malls
  • Xinyi District: Taipei’s modern commercial core features massive, interconnected luxury malls like Taipei 101 Mall and Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, home to international designer brands and high-end boutiques.
  • Ximending: A bustling pedestrian hub popular with youth culture, streetwear, trendy apparel, and sneaker shops.
  • Zhongxiao Dunhua (East Area): Known for trendy local fashion boutiques, indie designer labels, and hip cafes tucked into side alleys.
  • Bargain Markets & Night Markets
  • Wufenpu Shopping District – A massive maze of wholesale clothing alleys near Songshan Station offering cheap fashion, accessories, and shoes.
  • Shilin Night Market

  • Taiwan’s morning markets
  • “早市” (zǎoshì)

  • What does the term “morning market” mean in Taiwan? It is much more than simply a place to buy vegetables. A Taiwan “morning market” – “早市” (“zǎoshì”) – is one of the best places to observe ordinary daily life. If a foreign guest seeks to understand Taiwan beyond the tourist attractions then gaining an appreciation for the pulse & culture of a traditional morning market should be very high on the list of “things to do”.
  • There is an important distinction between the “neighborhood morning market” & a “wholesale market”. Wholesale markets can be operating in the middle of the night. Taipei’s major produce & seafood markets, for example, can be bustling at 2–3 AM.

  • A foreign visitor also will not necessarily experience the same linguistic environment in markets across the Island of Taiwan. Depending on the location & age of the shoppers, a visitor may hear: Taiwanese Hokkien / Taigi, Mandarin, Hakka & Indigenous languages in some communities. There are also variations in how the different languages are used functionally. Taiwan’s markets are strongly local & the linguistic character can change considerably from one region to another. There is not just one way to say any of the following terms used in shopping at Taiwan markets:

  • “How much?”
  • “This one is fresh today.”
  • “Give me half a kilo.”
  • “No, that’s too expensive.”
  • “I’ll take these”.
