These rivers flow from the central mountains to the Taiwan Strait, with smaller urban rivers like the Dali and Luchuan Canal providing recreational spaces.

  • The Dajia River (大甲溪) is the fifth-longest river in Taiwan, flowing approximately 142 km. from the Central Mountain Range westward through Taichung City before emptying into the Taiwan Strait. It is the only river in Taiwan with a series of reservoirs and power plants used to generate clean energy. Major facilities include the Deji Reservoir (the highest dam in Taiwan), Qingshan, Guguan, and Tianlun power stations. The watershed covers a drainage basin of about 1,236 km² and is known for its steep gradient, which makes it ideal for hydropower but prone to rapid flow during heavy rains.

  • Daan River (大安溪) is a major waterway that marks the boundary between Miaoli County and Taichung City. It is 105 kilometers in length and is the seventh-longest river on the Island of Taiwan. and flows into the Taiwan Strait. The Da’an River Grand Canyon is located in the Dongshi District of Taichung & is a unique geological formation created by the 921 Earthquake & subsequent erosion, revealing deep chasms and layered rock.
