  • Hiking in Nantou – 南投縣文化中徒步的角色

  • Nantou County is the heart of Taiwan’s high-mountain hiking, offering everything from the country’s highest peak to mystical bamboo forests and serene lakeside strolls. Whether you are looking for a multi-day alpine expedition or a casual afternoon walk, Nantou has a diverse range of trails to explore.

  • Essential Preparation: (i) Permits: High-altitude hikes like Yushan and some routes in Taroko National Park require park entry and police permits applied for online in advance; (ii) Weather: Mountain conditions change rapidly. Always check forecasts and carry rain gear even if it looks sunny; (iii) Gear: Bring a headlamp, offline maps, and plenty of water, especially for remote peaks like Hehuanshan West

  • Yushan (Jade Mountain) Main Peak: At 3,952 meters, this is Taiwan’s tallest peak. It is a strenuous 16.5–21.8 km return hike. A permit is strictly required, and foreigners can apply for a special quota up to four months in advance.

  • Hehuanshan Peaks: Often called the “easiest” high-mountain peaks due to their accessibility from Highway 14. Main, East, and North Peaks: Moderate trails offering panoramic alpine views. West Peak: A much more challenging all-day hike (8–12 hours) involving multiple “false peaks”.

  • Qilai South Peak & Nanhua Mountain: A popular two-day journey often accessed via the Tianchi Villa. These are considered good entry points for those new to high-altitude trekking

  • Xitou Nature Education Area: Famous for its towering bamboo groves and the Forest Skywalk elevated 40 feet above the forest floor. It offers both paved easy roads and more rugged paths like the Phoenix Mountain Trail.

  • Shanlinxi (Sun Link Sea): A “hidden gem” known for its cascading waterfalls like Songlong Rock Waterfall and misty autumn foliage. The Chuanlin Trail is a gentle 60-minute stroll through ancient cypress trees

  • Sun Moon Lake Trail: A very popular, mostly level path that follows the shoreline with spectacular emerald water views.

  • Maolan Mountain Trail: An easy 1-hour hike from the main road near Sun Moon Lake, famous for its sunrise views over tea plantations and the lake.

  • Longfeng Falls: A short 20-minute walk leading to two tall, picturesque waterfalls, ideal for a quick picnic

  • Mountains in Nantou – 南投縣文化中山的角色

  • Nantou County is the only landlocked county on the Island of Taiwan. It is also home to some of the island’s most iconic mountain ranges, including the Yushan Range & the Central Mountain Range. There are a total of 41 peaks higher than 3,000 meters in elevation. Many of these form part of the renowned “100 Peaks of Taiwan”.

  • Yushan (Jade Mountain): Standing at 3,952 meters, this is the highest peak in Taiwan and Northeast Asia. It features five main peaks: Main, Eastern, Northern, Southern, and Western. The hike to the summit typically takes two days and requires a permit.

  • Hehuanshan (Joy Mountain): Famous for being the most accessible high-mountain area in Taiwan, with several peaks above 3,000 meters reachable via short, well-maintained trails. It is a rare spot in Taiwan to see snow during winter and was designated an International Dark Sky Park for stargazing.

  • Qilai Mountain: Known for its dramatic, jagged “knife-edge” ridges, this is considered one of Taiwan’s more challenging and dangerous treks.

  • Shuishe Mountain: The highest peak overlooking Sun Moon Lake at 2,059 meters, offering panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding Central Mountain Range.

  • 99 Peaks (Jiujiufeng): A unique geological landscape in Caotun Township consisting of numerous sharp, independent peaks known for their red clay soil that appears to “flame” from a distance.

  • Climbing in Nantou – 南投縣文化中登山的角色

  • Nantou County is primarily known for its high-altitude mountain climbing and scenic hiking rather than established outdoor rock climbing crags like Long Dong. The gateway to Taiwan’s most iconic high-altitude peaks frequently require permits and preparation for alpine conditions. Nantou also offers unique vertical adventures ranging from indoor technical walls to expert-led forest canopy climbing.

  • Jade Mountain (Yushan): At 3,952 meters, it is the tallest mountain in Taiwan. Many climbers start their journey from Nantou to summit this peak.

  • Hehuanshan: Located on the border of Nantou and Hualien, this area offers several “100 Peaks” that are relatively accessible for those with high-altitude experience.

  • Qilai South Peak & Nanhua Shan: These are popular entry-level “100 Peaks” for those looking to start high-mountain climbing in Taiwan.

  • Semi-Hills Dream Factory (攀岩牆): Located in Nantou City, this facility features a high-quality indoor climbing wall. It is often cited as a more affordable and accessible option than some coastal spots, suitable for both children and adults looking to test their grip strength.

  • Tree Climbing with Beast School: For a unique forest experience, Beast School offers expert-led tree climbing in Nantou’s lush forests. They use specialized ropes and harnesses to teach safe ascent techniques while providing views of the landscape from the canopy.

  • Shuishe Great Mountain Trail (水社大山): While technically a hike, this is a demanding “mountain climbing” experience near Sun Moon Lake. The trail is precipitous in sections, requiring a full day and climbing roughly 1,300 meters in elevation through bamboo forests to reach the 2,059-meter peak
