BIODIVERSITY – 生 命 多 樣 性

( taipeitimes.com )
- Biodiversity on Orchid Island – 紅頭嶼文化中生命多樣性的角色
- Lanyu (Orchid Island) is one of Taiwan’s most biologically unique places. Located southeast of the main Island of Taiwan in the path of the warm Kuroshio Current, the island combines tropical rainforest, volcanic mountains, coral reefs & rich marine ecosystems in a relatively small area. Because of its isolation, many species evolved separately & are found nowhere else on Earth. One of the most remarkable features of Lanyu is that it is Taiwan’s only true tropical rainforest environment. The island’s hot, humid climate supports dense forests filled with orchids, ferns, pandanus trees, and tropical coastal plants that are uncommon or absent on Taiwan’s main island. The island was renamed “Orchid Island” because of its famous native orchids, especially wild moth orchids. Scientists have documented around 65 orchid species on Lanyu with many considered threatened or extremely rare.
- Several animals are endemic to Lanyu, meaning they exist nowhere else. Examples include: (i) the Lanyu scops owl; (ii) the Rhinogobius lanyuensis; (iii) unique reptiles and bird populations adapted to the island’s forests and coastline; and (iv) the freshwater goby Rhinogobius lanyuensis which has recently received stronger legal protection in Taiwan because its habitat has been threatened by typhoons, waterway construction, and environmental change.
- The marine biodiversity around Lanyu is extremely important. Coral reefs ring much of the island and support tropical fish, sea turtles, reef organisms, and migratory species carried northward by the Kuroshio Current. The island is especially famous for flying fish migrations, which are central both ecologically and culturally.
- A major reason Lanyu still retains much of its biodiversity is the traditional ecological knowledge of the indigenous Tao people (also called Yami). For centuries, the Tao developed seasonal fishing systems, rituals, and taboos that effectively limited overfishing and protected breeding cycles. During flying fish season, certain fish species are harvested while reef fish are avoided, helping marine populations recover naturally. The Tao calendar divides the year according to ecological cycles: (i) waiting season; (ii) flying fish season; and (iii) reef fishing season. This traditional system acts almost like a community-based conservation program. Modern researchers increasingly recognize these customs as sophisticated environmental management practices rather than superstition.
- Lanyu faces environmental pressures. Tourism, climate change, stronger typhoons, invasive species & habitat disturbance threaten some native ecosystems. Another long-standing issue is the controversial nuclear waste storage site established on the island in the 1980s, which many Tao residents have opposed for decades.
- Today, Lanyu is viewed as: (i) a biodiversity hotspot of tropical Taiwan; and (ii) a living example of indigenous ecological stewardship The island has even been proposed as one of Taiwan’s potential World Heritage Sites because of the combination of natural ecosystems and Tao cultural traditions.

BIRDS – 鳥 類

( domthebirder.com )
- Birding on Orchid Island – 紅頭嶼文化中鳥類的角色
- Lanyu — also known as Orchid Island (蘭嶼) — is one of the most fascinating bird habitats in Taiwan. Because the island sits between Taiwan & the northern Philippines, its birdlife mixes Taiwanese, tropical Philippine, migratory East Asian & oceanic seabird species. Birders consider it one of the best places in Taiwan for seeing rare island birds & migratory visitors. Bird migration on Lanyu is especially interesting because the island lies along routes used by birds traveling between the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, and mainland Asia. During migration seasons, unusual species can appear after storms or strong winds. Ecologically, Lanyu is considered so important that BirdLife International recognizes it as a special secondary endemic bird area connected to Taiwan’s endemic bird region. Night birding tours are particularly popular for hearing & spotting the Lanyu Scops Owl. The island is an excellent location to observe seabirds & coastal birds, including: (i) terns; (ii) herons; (iii) reef herons; (iv) shearwaters; (v) boobies; and (vi) migratory shorebirds (“waders”). The island’s birdlife is closely connected with the culture of the indigenous “Tao” people (also called “Yami”). Traditional “Tao culture” emphasizes respect for seasonal cycles, forests & the sea, which helped preserve much of Lanyu’s natural environment for centuries.
- Elegant Scops Owl – The “Lanyu Scops Owl” is an endemic island subspecies found only on Lanyu. It lives in subtropical forest and is often heard at night near villages and mountain slopes. Conservation groups consider it important because of its tiny range and vulnerability to habitat disturbance.
- Whistling Green Pigeon – Also called the Taiwan Green Pigeon, this beautiful green bird is much easier to observe on Lanyu than on Taiwan’s main island. BirdLife International treats Lanyu as especially important for this species.
- Japanese Paradise Flycatcher – A striking migratory bird with long ribbon-like tail feathers in males. Lanyu is one of the few places in Taiwan where it breeds regularly.
- Philippine Cuckoo-Dove – This tropical dove reflects Lanyu’s close ecological ties to the Philippines. It is uncommon elsewhere in Taiwan.
- Brown-eared Bulbul – Large numbers occur on the island, especially during migration periods.
- Lowland White-eye – One of the island’s most abundant resident birds, commonly seen in forests, villages, and farmland.

FISH – 魚 類

- Fishing on Orchid Island – 紅頭嶼文化中魚類的角色
- Fishing on Lanyu Island (also called Orchid Island) is far more than a way to catch food — it is the cultural and spiritual center of life for the Indigenous Tao (Yami) people. The island sits in the path of the warm Kuroshio Current, which brings abundant marine life, especially flying fish, to the waters around the island.
- The Flying Fish Tradition
- The most famous fishing activity on Lanyu is the annual flying fish season. The Tao people regard flying fish as a sacred gift from heaven, and the season shapes the island’s calendar, rituals, social organization, and boat culture.
- The Tao divide the year into three major fishing seasons:
- Rayon (Flying Fish Season) — roughly February to June/July
- Teyteyka — summer and early autumn reef-fishing season
- Amyan — winter waiting season when people prepare for the return of flying fish
- During the flying fish season:
- Men go out in traditional wooden boats to catch migratory fish.
- Families dry and preserve fish on wooden racks.
- Villages hold ceremonies to “call” the fish to the island.
- Certain fishing methods and fish species are restricted according to traditional rules.
- Traditional Tao Fishing Boats
- One of the most striking symbols of Lanyu fishing culture is the handcrafted Tao fishing boat, often called a tatala. These boats are:
- hand-carved from wood,
- painted with red, white, and black geometric designs,
- built through communal labor and ritual,
- designed for offshore fishing in rough Pacific waters.
- Even though many modern motorboats are now used, traditional boats still play an important ceremonial and cultural role. Some fishers continue to use them for actual fishing.
- Sustainable Fishing Practices
- The Tao people are often praised for their ecological knowledge. Their fishing customs act as a traditional conservation system:
- certain species may only be caught during specific seasons,
- some fish are reserved for ceremonies,
- reef fishing is restricted during flying fish migration periods,
- taboos help prevent overfishing.
- Modern researchers have noted that many of these customs align closely with marine sustainability principles
- What Fish Are Common Around Lanyu?
- Waters around Lanyu are rich in:
- flying fish,
- tuna,
- mahi-mahi (dolphinfish),
- reef fish,
- squid,
- lobster,
- occasional large pelagic species.
- Fishing and Tourism
- Visitors to Lanyu sometimes:
- join traditional boat experiences,
- watch flying fish drying,
- observe ceremonies,
- eat local flying fish dishes,
- go snorkeling or spearfishing with guides.
- However, tourists are expected to respect Tao customs. During flying fish season there are important cultural taboos, including:
- not casually boarding traditional boats,
- not interfering with ceremonies,
- avoiding disrespectful photography,
- respecting village rules and sacred spaces.
- For the Tao people, fishing is deeply tied to:
- identity,
- spirituality,
- family structure,
- craftsmanship,
- oral traditions,
- seasonal festivals,
- survival on a remote volcanic island.
- Many elders worry that modernization, commercial fishing pressure, and younger generations leaving the island may threaten these traditions.

FORESTS – 森 林

- Forests on Orchid Island – 紅頭嶼文化中森林的角色
- Lanyu — also called Orchid Island — has some of the most distinctive tropical forests in Taiwan. Because the island sits in the warm Pacific southeast of Taiwan proper, its forests are more similar to those of the northern Philippines than to Taiwan’s temperate mountain forests.
- Main Types of Forest on Lanyu
- Tropical Rainforest
- The dominant natural forest on Lanyu is humid tropical rainforest. These forests are dense, green year-round, and filled with broadleaf evergreen trees, climbing vines, mosses, and ferns.
- Common characteristics include:
- Thick canopy cover
- Heavy rainfall and high humidity
- Rich understory vegetation
- Many epiphytes (plants growing on other plants)
- Important native trees include:
- Breadfruit relatives
- Banyan species
- Hardwood tropical trees
- Screw pines along coastal zones
- Some forest areas are extremely rugged because Lanyu is volcanic and mountainous.
- Coastal Forests
- Near the shoreline, salt-tolerant forests grow in windy conditions. These forests help stabilize soil and protect villages from typhoon winds and ocean spray.
- You can often find:
- Pandanus (screw pine)
- Coastal shrubs
- Small twisted trees shaped by sea winds
- Secondary Forest and Village Landscapes
- Not all of Lanyu’s forests are untouched wilderness. Some areas are secondary growth forests that regenerated after:
- Traditional agriculture
- Typhoon damage
- Village expansion
- The Indigenous Tao (Yami) people historically managed parts of the landscape carefully rather than clearing huge areas permanently.
- Biodiversity of the Forests
- Lanyu’s forests are biologically important because the island is isolated and acts like a bridge between Taiwan and the Philippines.
- The forests support:
- Endemic plants found nowhere else
- Tropical bird species
- Fruit bats
- Reptiles and amphibians adapted to humid environments
- Numerous insects, including butterflies and beetles
- Several plant species on Lanyu are considered rare within Taiwan.
- Indigenous Relationship with the Forest
- The forests are deeply connected to the culture of the Indigenous Tao people.
- Traditionally, forests provided:
- Canoe-building materials
- House-building wood
- Medicinal plants
- Wild foods
- Protection of watersheds and fishing environments
- The Tao traditionally practiced selective harvesting rather than large-scale deforestation. Cultural taboos and seasonal rules also helped conserve resources.
- Typhoons and Forest Ecology
- Lanyu is frequently struck by Pacific typhoons. Forests there are adapted to:
- Strong winds
- Heavy rain
- Landslides
- Salt spray
- After storms, damaged forest areas regenerate quickly due to the tropical climate.
- Conservation Issues
- Modern pressures include:
- Tourism development
- Road construction
- Invasive species
- Climate change
- Waste and pollution problems
- Parts of the island are protected, and scientists study Lanyu because its forests are ecologically unique within Taiwan.
- What the Forests Feel Like
- Visitors often describe Lanyu’s forests as:
- Warm and humid
- Filled with insect and bird sounds
- Dense and jungle-like
- Misty after rain
- Rich with ocean scents carried inland by wind
- The combination of tropical forest, volcanic mountains, and nearby ocean gives Lanyu a very different atmosphere from most of Taiwan.

HIKING – 徒 步

- Hiking on Orchid Island – 紅頭嶼文化中徒步的角色
- Hiking on Lanyu — also called Orchid Island (蘭嶼) — is very different from hiking in Taiwan’s big mountain parks. The island is volcanic, humid, tropical, and deeply connected to the culture of the indigenous Tao (Yami) people. Most hikes are short to medium-length rather than multi-day alpine treks, but the scenery is dramatic: sea cliffs, jungle forest, grasslands, lava rock coastlines, and panoramic Pacific Ocean views.
- Red Head Mountain (紅頭山)
- This is generally considered the island’s most challenging and rewarding hike. It climbs to the highest point on Lanyu and passes through dense tropical forest with steep sections and excellent ocean views.
- Great Heaven Lake / Datianchi (大天池)
- A favorite trail leading into the island’s forested volcanic interior. The lake area is surrounded by jungle vegetation and misty mountain scenery. The hike is moderate and often done with local guides familiar with the terrain and ecology.
- Green Green Grassland (青青草原)
- A shorter and easier coastal grassland trail known for sweeping views of cliffs and ocean. It is especially popular for sunrise and photography.
- Lover Cave (情人洞)
- An easy coastal walk leading to a sea-eroded rock formation and coastal viewpoints. This is more of a scenic walk than a strenuous hike.
- What Makes Hiking on Lanyu Special
- Tropical Island Ecology
- The island contains rare tropical plants and wildlife found nowhere else in Taiwan. Dense forest trails can feel almost jungle-like, with giant ferns, humid air, insects, and volcanic terrain.
- Tao (Yami) Cultural Landscape
- Many trails pass near traditional Tao villages, fishing areas, and sacred cultural spaces. Respect for local customs is important. Some areas may have restricted access or cultural significance.
- Ocean Views Everywhere
- Unlike Taiwan’s central mountains, Lanyu’s trails constantly open onto views of the Pacific Ocean, sea cliffs, and coral coastline. The combination of mountains and ocean is one of the island’s defining features.
- Practical Hiking Advice
- Best seasons: Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable. Summers can be extremely hot and humid. Typhoon season can affect trail safety and transportation.
- Transportation: Most hikers rent scooters to reach trailheads. The island road circles most of Lanyu.
- Guides: Local guided hikes are often recommended, especially for interior forest routes like Datianchi.
- Heat & hydration: Carry more water than you think you need. Shade can disappear quickly on exposed coastal trails.
- Footwear: Good hiking shoes or trail shoes help because many paths are muddy, rocky, or slippery after rain.
- Cash: Visitors frequently report that foreign cards often do not work reliably on the island, so carrying cash is wise.
- Night Hiking and Stargazing
- Lanyu is famous for dark skies and night ecology tours. Some visitors hike or drive up to high viewpoints near the weather station for stargazing. Guided “night observation” tours sometimes focus on nocturnal wildlife and island ecology.
- Overall Hiking Character
- Lanyu hiking is less about conquering long distances and more about experiencing a remote island atmosphere. Many travelers combine:
- short hikes,
- snorkeling or diving,
- scooter touring,
- Tao cultural experiences,
- and ocean scenery during a 2–4 day visit.

MOUNTAINS – 山

( nickkembel.com )
- Mountains on Orchid Island – 紅頭嶼文化中山的角色
- Lanyu Island (蘭嶼), also called Orchid Island, is a small volcanic island southeast of Taiwan that is surprisingly mountainous for its size. The island covers only about 45 square kilometers, yet its interior rises steeply into rugged, jungle-covered peaks. Many visitors are struck by how the mountains seem to rise directly from the Pacific Ocean.
- The mountains of Lanyu were formed by volcanic activity associated with the Luzon Volcanic Arc, part of the tectonic boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Much of the island is made of dark volcanic andesite rock, with steep ridges, cliffs, and eroded lava formations.
- One of the most important mountains on the island is:
- Hongtou Mountain (紅頭山) — the highest peak on Lanyu, reaching about 552 meters (1,811 feet). Although not extremely high compared to Taiwan’s giant mountains, it dominates the island because Lanyu is relatively small. From the summit area, hikers can often see the coastline, coral reefs, and the vast Pacific Ocean surrounding the island.
- Lanyu is often described as having “eight mountains over 400 meters high.” The mountains are densely forested with tropical and subtropical vegetation, including:
- thick rainforest
- pandanus trees
- giant ferns
- orchids
- coastal jungle plants
- The steep terrain also creates many small valleys and seasonal streams.
- The mountains are culturally important to the Indigenous Tao (Yami) people, who have lived on the island for centuries. Traditionally, different mountain and forest areas were associated with hunting, gathering, and spiritual beliefs. The Tao people usually lived along the coast, while the mountainous interior remained largely wild and less inhabited.
- Today, the mountains are popular for:
- hiking
- photography
- birdwatching
- stargazing
- viewing endemic plants and wildlife
- One well-known high point is the weather station near the mountain ridge, which many travelers visit for panoramic views and night skies.
- Unlike Taiwan’s massive alpine mountain ranges such as the Yushan region or the Central Mountain Range, Lanyu’s mountains are tropical volcanic peaks. They are lower in elevation but feel dramatic because they rise abruptly from sea level and are surrounded by ocean on all sides.
