THE KAXABU (or KAHABU) PEOPLE- 噶哈巫族

  • Here’s an overview of the Kaxabu (噶哈巫 / Gáhāwū) Indigenous People of Taiwan — one of the island’s Plains Indigenous (Pingpu) groups with a distinct identity, history, language, and contemporary cultural struggles:

  • The Kaxabu people are an Indigenous ethnolinguistic group from Taiwan, historically part of the island’s Plains Indigenous (Pingpu) peoples. They lived in the central western plains of Taiwan before being pushed inland by waves of Han Chinese settlement and other pressures.
They are considered part of a wider Pazeh–Kaxabu group linguistically and culturally, but the Kaxabu maintain a distinct identity.

  • Originally, the Kaxabu lived along the Dajia River basin on the Taiwanese plains (in areas of present-day Taichung).
Due to encroachment by Han settlers from the 18th century onward, many migrated inland during the 19th century and settled around Puli Township in Nantou County (in central Taiwan).
Today, Kaxabu communities are associated with villages and areas around Puli, particularly in places like Shouchengfen and Danan, where descendants work to preserve language and culture.

  • The Kaxabu share cultural traditions with neighboring Plains Indigenous groups like the Pazeh, including shared ceremonies such as Azem (a traditional New Year celebration with song and dance).
Local place names and oral traditions reflect the Kaxabu language and worldview — for example, knowledge about sites around Shouchengfen and how their names relate to Kaxabu language terms.
Music, oral history, and community activities continue to play a role in identity revitalization among younger Kaxabu descendants.

  • Official Recognition & Contemporary Issues
The Kaxabu are not officially recognized by the Taiwanese government as one of the 16 Indigenous Peoples with full legal status and rights under the Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP).
Like other Pingpu groups such as the Babuza, Siraya, Pazeh, and Taokas, activists have demanded recognition, highlighting their distinct language, history, and culture and contesting past policies that excluded or assimilated their ancestors.
In recent years, legal developments have renewed hope: after a 2022 constitutional court ruling affirming the rights of unrecognized Plains Indigenous groups to seek recognition, the Kaxabu — along with Siraya and Pazeh — filed applications for official indigenous status.

  • Without official status, Kaxabu communities lack access to many government resources for language revitalization, education, cultural preservation, and social welfare that recognized indigenous groups receive.

  • Although centuries of assimilation and displacement have challenged continuity, Kaxabu descendants continue to celebrate and reclaim their identity through local associations, cultural events, music, and language projects.
Many community members emphasize that identity is lived through language, ceremony, and intergenerational connection — beyond simply legal categories.

  • Kaxabu are a Plains Indigenous group historically in the western plains of Taiwan and now centered around Puli, Nantou.
Their language (Kaxabu a ahan) is a distinct Formosan language closely related to Pazeh and endangered.
They share traditions and history with other central Plains Indigenous groups.
They are not currently officially recognized by the Taiwanese government, though recent legal developments offer new opportunities for recognition.
Cultural revitalization is ongoing through community efforts, education, and activism.

  • The Kaxabu language (Kaxabu a ahan, 噶哈巫語) is a Formosan Austronesian language — part of the Pazeh–Kaxabu branch. Linguistically, it’s closely related to Pazeh and shares many features, though it maintains distinct differences in phonology and vocabulary. The language has been critically endangered; as of earlier documentation there were very few speakers remaining, and transmission to younger generations has been severely disrupted. Local revitalization efforts are underway through community groups and cultural organizations to document and teach the language.
