THE HLA’ ALUA PEOPLE – 拉阿魯哇族

  • The Hla’alua People (拉阿魯哇族) is one of Taiwan’s officially-recognized Indigenous peoples. The tribal name is often written in English as Hla’ Alua or La’alua They are a small, distinct, Austronesian-speaking group with a rich ceremonial & spiritual tradition. The current Hla’alua Population is estimated at approximately 400–500 people, making the Hla’alua one of Taiwan’s smallest Indigenous groups. The primary location for the Hla’alua People is in several villages in Kaohsiung City.

  • For much of the 20th century, the Hla’alua People were administratively classified as part of other groups, particularly the Tsou People (鄒族), However contemporary linguistic & cultural research demonstrates their distinct identity. After years of advocacy, the Hla’alua were officially recognized by the government of the Republic of China on the Island of Taiwan in 2014.

  • The Hla’alua are culturally significant because: (i.) They preserve unique ritual systems that are unique to the tribe; (ii.) their experience highlights the importance of Indigenous self-identification; and (iii.) they play a key role in the broader movement among the world’s indigenous peoples for Indigenous rights &cultural revival.

  • The Hla’alua language is linguistically within the Austronesian family of languages. The Hla’alua language is closely related to the Kanakanavu language. The language is critically-endangered; there are only a small number of fluent speakers, mostly elders, who are native speakers. Revitalization efforts for the Hla’alua language include: (i.) community language classes; (ii.) Documentation projects; and (iii.) use of the language in rituals & cultural education.

  • The Hla’alua culture is deeply ritual-centered. The culture is characterized by a strong belief in ancestral spirits & nature spirits. Rituals are essential for maintaining the harmony between humans, ancestors & the natural world. Ritual specialists traditionally play a central role in preserving the sacred knowledge. The Miatungusu Ceremony is the most-important annual ritual. It honors ancestors and ensures protection, fertility & communal well-being. The ceremony involves chanting, offerings & strict ritual roles.

  • The social organization of the Hla’alua People is traditionally organized around kinship & ritual responsibilities. Social cohesion is reinforced through collective ceremonies, shared taboos, and oral traditions.

  • The Hla’alua People have historically practiced: (i) Shifting cultivation,; (ii) Hunting; & (iii) Gathering forest resources. Today, most Hla’alua people participate in the modern economy of the Island of Taiwan. They actively engage in cultural preservation through festivals, education, and heritage tourism
