Matsu’s Blue Tears. Between April and September, bioluminescent plankton emit a blue light, resulting in a phenomenon in the Matsu Islands called “blue tears.” The plankton, known as “dinoflagellates”, feed on nutrients in the water, and the “blue tears” are interpreted to be an ecological warning sign that the coastal waters around Matsu are too rich in nutrients.
