FENG SHUI – 風 水

Feng Shui in the culture of Taiwan. (bluemountainfengshui.com)

  • Feng Shui practice in Yunlin – 宜蘭縣的風水

  • There are several ways in which practice & application of Feng Shui principles have influenced society & culture in Yunlin:

  • Settlement Patterns – Structures, gates, & entrances to buildings and family compounds have been traditionally aligned to auspicious compass directions. Sometimes renovation of temples and other buildings takes place in cyclical Feng Shui periods which emphasizes the auspiciousness of renewal. Village layouts and temple sites were traditionally chosen to capture river bends and natural “qi” flows.

  • Temple Design – Temples & communal buildings are placed to receive favorable “qi” from rivers, gentle slopes, and ridges. Orientation, courtyards, and renovations all aligned with Feng Shui cycles and “auspicious directions”.

  • Land Use – Communities historically resisted altering sacred landforms that are believed to be tied to prosperity. Protection of geomantic lines (dragon veins) influenced decisions such as mining and construction.

  • Local Rituals – Annual rituals reaffirm spatial balance, using temple processions and geomantic focal points to cleanse and refresh energy. Festivals like Liu Fang Ma and Wang Ye worship emphasize the need to uphold and renew “spatial spiritual harmony”.

  • A 2025 academic study explores why early settlers chose specific locations in Siluo Township (Yunlin)—from both historical and Feng Shui perspectives. It highlights the strategic placement along the meandering Zhuoshui River, fertile flatlands, and gentle terrain—aligning with the classical Feng Shui ideology of “dragon veins” (qi channels) guiding prosperity. Temples and settlements were sited to capture beneficial energy from the landform and water flows.
  • iafor.org – “Exploring the Cultural and Historical Evolution of Siluo, Yunlin in Taiwan Through Feng Shui Theory” @ Research Archive of the Int’l Academic Forum.

  • Temple Feng Shui: Structure, Orientation & Renovation

  • Temples across Yunlin exhibit design which has been carefully informed by Feng Shui principles:

  • Xianlong Temple in Pingtung (though outside Yunlin) demonstrates how major renovations (2009–2011 interior work and 2014 gate construction) aligned with an auspicious Feng Shui cycle (Period 8, 2004–2023), facing a prosperous NNE direction and backed by higher ground (or “mountain”)—boosting community harmony and spiritual energy. Though not in Yunlin, this case reflects Feng Shui principles applied regionally in temple architecture.
  • airitilibrary.com – “Feng Shui Auspiciousness Analysis of Temple Structure – A Case Study of Xianlong Temple in Xinyuan Village, Pingtung County, Taiwan” @ AIRITI research website

  • Mailiao Gongfan Temple – 麥寮拱範宮 (Yunlin) faced West and was rebuilt several times (1906–1908; 1930–37) by Feng Shui-conscious planners, preserving its significance as a national monument dedicated to Mazu. The siting likely considered qi-flow from terrain and water—for spiritual harmony and community prosperity.
  • wikipedia.org – Mailiao Gongfan Temple – 麥寮拱範宮 @ Wikipedia . org

  • Xiluo Guangfu Temple – 西螺廣福宮 (built 1644) is an example of traditional Mazu-oriented temple layout reflecting local geomantic thinking. The temple compound follows classic Feng Shui orientation: courtyard layout, front-facing entrance aligned with protective spirits, and internal spatial layout designed for balanced “qi” within Siluo’s village grid.
  • wikipedia.org – Xiluo Guangfu Temple – 西螺廣福宮 @ Wikipedia . org

  • Land and Environmental Constraints

  • Historical records show that, across Taiwan, including Yunlin, there were active concerns about damaging “dragon veins” through excavation or mining—highlighting how geomancy shaped even land-use decisions. For instance, in the 19th century, local communities contested coal mining near feng shui‐deemed vital channels to preserve prosperity.
  • wikipedia.org – “Dragon veins” – 龍脈/龙脉 – concept in Feng Shui @ Wikipedia . org

  • Folk Beliefs & Spiritual Convergence in Yunlin

  • Religion & Feng Shui are deeply intermingled in local rituals:
  • The Liu Fang Ma (Heavenly Holy Mother) Festival, a signature Yunlin event spanning some 360 years, merges spiritual belief and communal prosperity—participants parade statues across terrain in fixed routes, integrating local geomantic zones to cleanse malevolent spirits and bring good luck. Gadgetry like GPS and modern lighting are now used to honor tradition while following auspicious paths.
  • thenewslens.com – “The Way of the Gods – Folk Religion in Taiwan” @ The News Lens website

  • Wang Ye (Royal Lords) worship is prevalent within Taiwan, including in Yunlin: groups like 五府千歲 temples are believed to govern spiritual protection over regions. Their temples are often placed at feng shui‐determined strategic intersections or crossroads for maximal spiritual protection and qi flow.
