THE THAO PEOPLE – 邵族

  • Thao People of Taiwan (邵族) are one of the smallest officially-recognized froups of Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan, with a population of only a few hundred. They are best known as the original inhabitants of the area around Sun Moon Lake in the central Taiwan county of Nantou.

  • The Thao language belongs to the Austronesian language family. It is critically endangered, with very few fluent speakers remaining. Revitalization efforts include: language classes, compilation of dictionaries & community teaching programs.

  • Historically, the Thao lived by: (i.) Fishing (especially in Sun Moon Lake); (ii.) Hunting; and (iii.) Slash-and-burn agriculture. Fish, particularly carp and other freshwater species, played an important role in the diet & culture of the Thao People.

  • The social structure of The Thao People is traditionally organized around patrilineal clans. Community leadership is held by elders who have ritual &social authority. The Thao People place strong emphasis on ancestral spirits & ritual specialists in their culture. Traditional Thao spirituality centers on Ancestor worship & Nature spirits.

  • The Thao were severely affected by Han Chinese settlement, Japanese colonial rule, and later development. The transformation of Sun Moon Lake into a major tourist destination greatly reduced the traditional lands held by the Thao People. But the Thao have worked to maintain cultural identity through festivals, museums & education. Many Thao people are involved in cultural tourism, preparation of handicrafts & cultural performances. The Thao Cultural Village & local museums help preserve & raise awareness of Thao history.
