THE TAOKAS PEOPLE – 道卡斯
- miaoli.gov.tw – Taokas
- The Taokas Indigenous People (大甲族 Taokas, sometimes written Taokas/Taoka) are one of Taiwan’s Plains Indigenous (Pingpu) peoples, with a history centered in central western Taiwan, especially today’s Taichung, Changhua, and Miaoli areas.
- Indigenous category: Plains Indigenous People (Pingpu)
Traditional territory: Central western plains of Taiwan
(notably the Dajia River basin and surrounding lowlands)
Current status: Not officially recognized by the Taiwanese government
Language family: Austronesian (Taokas language, now extinct)
Historical Background
Before large-scale Han Chinese migration, the Taokas lived in fertile plains well suited for:
Wet-rice agriculture
Hunting and fishing
River-based trade
During the 17th–19th centuries, they experienced intense pressure from:
Dutch colonial administration (1624–1662)
Qing-era Han settlement
Land loss through taxation, leases, and intermarriage
Over time, many Taokas communities were absorbed into Han society, leading to cultural and linguistic assimilation.
Language
The Taokas language belonged to the Austronesian language family
It is now considered extinct
Knowledge of the language survives only through:
Early missionary word lists
Comparative linguistic studies of Pingpu languages
Social and Cultural Life
Historically, Taokas society shared many traits common among plains peoples:
Village-based communities
Agricultural economy, especially rice and millet
Animistic beliefs, including:
Nature spirits
Ancestor reverence
Ritual calendars tied to planting and harvest cycles
Some customs were later blended with Han folk religion, a pattern still seen among Taokas descendants today.
Modern Identity and Revival Efforts
Although not officially recognized, Taokas descendants continue to work toward:
Cultural revival
Genealogical documentation
Legal recognition as an Indigenous people
These efforts parallel those of other Pingpu groups such as the Taivoan, Pazeh, Papora, and Babuza.
Relationship to Other Plains Peoples
The Taokas were culturally and linguistically connected to nearby plains groups, especially:
Pazeh
Papora
Babuza
Scholars often study these groups together when reconstructing central Taiwan’s Indigenous history.
Why the Taokas Matter
The Taokas story highlights:
The deep Indigenous roots of Taiwan’s western plains
The lasting effects of colonization and assimilation
