AVIATION – 航 空

- Airlines in Tainan – 臺南市文化中航空公司的角色
- Tainan Airport (TNN) is a smaller airport in southern Taiwan. As of mid-2025 there are no active international scheduled flights out of Tainan. All current scheduled flights from TNN are domestic. The number of domestic routes flown non-stop from Tainan is limited. Passenger volume & airline presence are small compared to larger airports in Taiwan (like Kaohsiung & Taoyuan). Many international travelers use Kaohsiung or Taipei for more options.
- Here are the airlines that offer service to and from Tainan, either at the present time or in the recent past:
- UNI Air is the primary carrier operating scheduled flights at Tainan. The airline is part of the EVA Air Group and offers domestic flights: (i) Tainan ↔ Penghu; (ii) Tainan ↔ Kinmen.
- China Airlines has operated international routes in & out of Tainan in the past, and maintains a presence & offices in Tainan. In the past there was service from Tainan ↔ Hong Kong; Tainan ↔ Osaka; etc. But these routes are not to be currently active.
- Vietjet Air has offered (or proposed) flights linking Tainan to Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City. The airline sometimes operated in the past via agent from UNI Air’s counter.

- Airports in Tainan – 臺南市文化中機場的角色
- Tainan Airport (臺南航空站) is located in the South District of Tainan City. The airport has a mixed Civil & Military use. It shares facilities with Tainan Air Base, The main service is flights offered on domestic routes by Uni Air. The airport has been approved for international flights since around 2011 but the number of international routes actually flown at the present time is limited.
- Because the runways are shared with the air force base, commercial flights are sometimes affected during military exercises or when military operations require priority.
- Many travelers going to & from Tainan might use Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) which is nearby and has several international routes.

- Airport / City transfer in Tainan – 臺南市文化中機場市區交通的角色
- Tainan City is fairly close to the Tainan Airport, so many of the transfers are 20–30 minutes into the city center. Transfer by taxi will range from 20-30 minutes to many city-center locations from Tainan Airport. Transfer by city or shuttle buses will also take about 20–30 minutes depending on the route. There’s a “Tainan Express” shuttle bus service that runs between Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) and Tainan with multiple stops including Tainan Bus Station, Shangri-La Hotel, and other stops. At Tainan Airport itself, there are several bus lines (City Bus, THSR Shuttle, etc.) connecting to the airport.
- Direct shuttle from Kaohsiung Airport to Tainan takes about 70 minutes for some services. This transfer is useful if arriving via Kaohsiung and going to Tainan. It is more comfortable than piecing together multiple legs of transport.
- Train Connections from Taoyuan International Airport or other points north on the Island of Taiwan can use the Taiwan High Speed Rail plus bus/taxi.

GEOGRAPHY – 地 理

- Geography of Tainan – 臺南市文化中地理的角色
- Where Tainan is in southwestern Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait. Tainan lies almost entirely on the Chianan Plain (嘉南平原) which is the largest and flattest plain on the island. Unlike Taiwan’s rugged east, Tainan is low-lying and open, which made it ideal for early settlement, farming, and trade. Extensive alluvial plains formed over centuries by river sediment make the low lying flat land in the western region of Tainan excellent for agriculture.
- The terrain of Tainan is mostly flat to gently rolling. Land elevation is generally below 40 meters (130 ft) above sea level. There are no major mountains in Tainan. The land only starts to rise gradually in the far east of Tainan toward the foothills of the Central Mountain Range.
- Tainan can be characterized by: (i.) an urban core which is a dense, historic cityscape with narrow streets & canals; (ii.) rural districts in the western area with rice paddies, sugarcane fields, fish ponds & fruit orchards; and (iii.) eastern districts which have more hills, reservoirs, & forested land.
- Several rivers cross Tainan or flow along the border with adjacent municipalities and counties. and shape both its landscape and history: (i) the Zengwen River (曾文溪) is the largest river in southern Taiwan and vital for irrigation in agricultural areas; (ii) the Yanshui River (鹽水溪) flows near the urban core of Tainan; and (iii) the Erren River (二仁溪) forms part of the southern boundary.
- Tainan has a long, shallow coastline along the Taiwan Strait. The coastal areas contain mudflats and lagoons rather than sandy beaches. There are extensive wetlands, especially in the west and within the boundaries of Taijiang National Park. The coastal flats are historically ideal for salt production, fishing, and aquaculture. The coastline has shifted over time due to sediment buildup—former harbors are now inland, which is why places that were once ports no longer touch the sea.
- Tainan’s climate is Tropical to Subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. Tainan gets less rainfall than northern Taiwan. The area is particularly vulnerable to typhoons and flooding, especially in low-lying coastal areas

MAPS – 地 图

- Maps of Tainan – 臺南市文化中地图的角色
- Maps of Tainan are rich in history, detail, and variety. There are several types of maps that have been prepared.
- Modern Administrative / City Maps show current boundaries (districts), major roads, transport links, landmarks. These are useful for planning travel, navigating neighborhoods, or understanding how the city is laid out today.
- There are Historical Maps dating back to Qing Dynasty and Japanese colonial period that show old road layouts, canals, fortifications, and district boundaries of the past.
The “Tainan Historical Maps” app (developed by Academia Sinica) lets you compare old maps (1875-1978) against current maps. Old maps are of particular interest because they often show canal networks, city walls & harbors which may no longer resemble their original condition. Over time many were removed or transformed as the city expanded under colonial influence.
- In 2018, Tainan published a 400-year-old atlas which contains 165 maps showing many historical views including administrative, harbor, road & topographic maps. Many of the maps were drawan during Japanese rule, when there was urban planning that modified street layouts, removed city walls to make room for new roads & changed names of districts/roads. The 400-year-old atlas isn’t just decorative – city government sees it as useful for things like flood control planning, cultural heritage documentation & tracking how the city’s geography and infrastructure have changed.
- eyeontaiwan.com – Tainan Map Atlas (165 maps) @ Eye on Taiwan . com
- There are Tourism & Cultural Maps which are intended to be used by visitors, and show cultural sites, old streets, temples, night markets & other points of interest. More stylized, often easier to read for tourists.
- Custom Illustrated *Art Maps” are available, and are intended for decoration or specialized use. They typically show implified road layouts, stylized colors & artistic emphasis for prints or posters.
- These Maps can be found in a variety of sources: (i) Digital Archives such as the Taiwan Digital Archives / Academia Sinica for historic maps; (ii) Wikimedia Commons contains many public domain and older maps; (iii) Apps like “Tainan Historical Maps”; and (iv) Official Tourism/City Government sites which often have modern maps or interactive ones.
- There is a branch office of the Tainan Tourist Bureau outside the main entrance to the Tainan Main Train Station which offers complimentary brochures & maps for visitors.

PHOTOGRAPHS – 圖 片

- Photography in Tainan – 臺南市文化中圖片的角色
- Tainan has a rich and evolving photographic arts scene, reflecting its deep history, cultural identity & a growing interest in experimental & socially engaged photography.
- Tainan is one of Taiwan’s oldest cities, full of heritage architecture, temples, alleyways, old markets, traditional industries, etc. This means there is a lot to photograph “on location” that embodies Taiwanese history and culture. In earlier decades, photography in Taiwan (including Tainan) was often documentary — recording changes in society, colonial influences, migration, temples, architecture, daily life. Over time, more experimental, personal, and artistic/photo‐conceptual approaches have become more common.
- Several types of subject matter are prominent in Tainan photography: (i.) Heritage, architecture, & texture: Old temples, colonial buildings, small alleys, wooden gates, old walls, etc. These provide visually rich material. (ii.) Street life & everyday scenes: Markets, night markets, temples, festivals. Because Tainan is less dense and frenetic compared to Taipei, there is a certain calm/texture in the everyday; (iii.) Analog photography / retro aesthetic: With places like YoYoMei FotoShop, there’s interest in film, old cameras, film stocks. Nostalgia is strong; (iv.) Identity, memory, disappearance: Some works deal with what is being lost: old social practices, old neighborhoods, or people’s memories. Also, reflection on Taiwan/Tainan’s colonial, indigenous, and local histories. (v.) Experimental / conceptual work: Cross‐cultural work (e.g. between Taiwan & Africa), mixing photography with digital media, installations, text, and performance.
- Challenges & Opportunities: (i.) Balancing tourist vs local photography: Many people photograph Tainan for its beauty and historic character (temples, heritage), but there’s always the challenge of going deeper — photographing less obvious stories, or those of underrepresented communities; (ii.) Space & funding: As with many places, getting institutional support, gallery space, funding for shows can be difficult. Residencies and creative parks help; and (iii.) Mix of analog & digital: There’s opportunity in the crossover; analog is cherished, but digital and social media push newer forms and visibility.
- The Tainan Art Museum (臺南市美術館, TAM) is a major civic institution that has hosted photography exhibitions.
- “182artspace” is an independent art space in Tainan. Their exhibitions run for ~6 weeks and include photography, installations, illustration, paintings. It’s part of the contemporary & experimental art ecology.
- YoYoMei FotoShop is a photo shop + studio + café / eatery hybrid. It is vintage / analog friendly, with retro gear, backdrops, analog film cameras, etc. It also has nostalgic portrait and analog photography spaces.
- National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Art Center has hosted photography exhibitions, including by notable groups. For example “V-10 Five Individuals @ Tainan,” showing works by members of the V-10 Visual Arts Group (founded in the 1970s) with a focus on image creation, experimental work, and reflective of Tainan themes.
- Cultural / Creative Parks & Residencies Programs such as the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) at places like Siao-Long Cultural Park and Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center. These provide time, space, and community for artists to explore their work, including photography.
- Tainan International Photography Festival (TiFF): A newer festival which seeks to weave together Tainan’s history, geography, human culture through photography. It includes main exhibitions, street photography, workshops, forums, etc.
Exhibitions that create dialogues — for example between Taiwan and Africa, or between past/traditional photography and contemporary practices (tech, identity, etc.). These point to a growing international/theoretical engagement.

PLACE NAMES – 地 名

- Tainan Place Names – 臺南市地名
- _____ – Tainan Place Names – 臺南市地名
- Cingkunshen / 青鯤鯓
- Qingkunshen (also seen as Cingkunshen / 青鯤鯓) is a coastal village area in Tainan (將軍區 / Jiangjun District). The name is often shortened to “Kunshen” (鯤鯓). Geographically it’s along Taiwan’s southwest coast, in a coastal, wetland salt‐marsh type environment. Cinqunshen is interesting because it combines nature + history + art: The salt-making past, its decline, and current wetlands make it a good case study / spot for ecology + heritage tourism. The fan-shaped salt fields, especially around sunrise or sunset, the “Life Tree” art installation, and the coastal vistas are photogenic.
- The name “青鯤鯓” comes from “青” (green/blue) + “鯤” (a mythical fish/whale‐like fish in Chinese myth) + “鯓” (a variant of “圳/圳/圳,” often meaning a water channel / bank / embankment), describing a peninsula/sandbar/reef area which, under sun, looks like a blue/green fish.
- Fan‐shaped Salt Fields (扇形鹽田, “Fan Salt Fields”) are one of the most visually striking features of Qingkunshen. These salt fields were constructed (in 1977) by Taiwan’s salt industry to create new land on sandbars and inner sea channels. After salt production scaled down / ended (around 2002 in several areas), many of the salt fields were abandoned (or ceased salt crystallizing), leaving wetlands, channels, and brackish water areas that are now ecologically rich. “Life Tree” Art Installation (生命之樹): A recent public art/landscape project in the fan‐shaped salt field area. A white arch / walkway / axis that complements the salt field’s fan pattern. It has become popular as a photo spot (“網美景點”) and helps draw attention to the salt fields and local scenery. “青鯤鯓鹽田濕地 (Qingkunshen Saltfield Wetland)” is also recognized for its importance for bird migration / wintering species. Visitor infrastructure has been improving: parking around salt fields / art installation; paths or boardwalks for viewing; food stops; local temples (e.g. Chao Tien Temple / 朝天宮) in the area.

National Cheng Kung University Hospital — a major medical center with extensive clinical services (over 1,300 beds) and specialty care.
Other public and private hospitals serve the city, supported by Taiwan’s National Health Insurance (NHI), which provides universal healthcare coverage to residents. Health stations and local health offices also exist in districts to support community services and connect people to care.
🚑 Reaching Underserved Areas
3. Mobile and Community Health Services
In rural or medically underserved parts of Tainan (e.g., Danei District), mobile health services deliver care directly to residents through periodic outreach by regional hospitals such as Chi Mei Liuying Hospital and Tainan Municipal Hospital. These mobile clinics offer outpatient services, chronic disease monitoring, vaccinations, health promotion, and home health care support.
This helps close gaps where permanent medical facilities are sparse, especially for elderly populations.
🦠 Public Health Challenges & Focus Areas
4. Infectious Disease Prevention
Vector-borne diseases: Local campaigns focus on Aedes mosquito control to prevent dengue and related illnesses.
Vaccine outreach: Programmes for seasonal influenza and respiratory viruses like COVID-19 continue to be strong, especially for older adults.
5. Chronic Disease and Screening
The city health bureau organizes screenings for conditions like diabetes (AI-assisted eye exams), vision issues in children, and other chronic disease prevention efforts.
6. Mental Health & Community Well-Being
Mental health promotion and support services are included in public health plans, with programs targeted at families, caregivers, and community groups.
💡 How Healthcare Works in Taiwan (Context)
While these Tainan initiatives operate within Taiwan’s broader healthcare system that uses a universal National Health Insurance (NHI) model, it’s worth noting that the national system faces challenges such as workforce shortages and sustainability issues—although many residents still report good access to quality care.
📌 Summary
Public health in Tainan combines strong local government leadership with Taiwan’s universal health insurance framework, emphasizing:
Disease prevention and health promotion
Accessible services for all areas, including rural districts via mobile health care
Community screening and education
Chronic disease management and infectious disease control
These efforts aim to ensure broad health coverage and foster a healthier urban environment for all residents of Tainan. - https://en.wikipedia.org

- Emergency rescue in Tainan – 臺南市文化中緊急救援的角色
- In Taiwan—including Tainan City—the emergency response system uses separate numbers for different services:
- Police – 110 – Crime, public safety issues, traffic accidents
- Fire & Ambulance – 119 – Fire response, rescue, medical emergencies requiring ambulance
- Emergency Call from Mobile (works without SIM)\ – 112 – Can be used to reach emergency services when other services don’t connect (if signal present)
- Important:
- 110 and 119 are the official emergency numbers in Taiwan.
- Calling 112 may help if 110/119 don’t connect, especially from a mobile phone without a local SIM.
- Don’t dial emergency numbers for non-emergencies; misuse (e.g., prank calls) can lead to fines.
- Support for Foreigners: If you’re in Tainan and need help but have language difficulties, there are helplines that can assist:
- Help Hotline for Foreigners: 0800-024-111 – 24-hour hotline offering support in Mandarin and often English/Japanese (can help connect you to emergency services or information).
- Local NIA (immigration) offices also provide some support if needed (number varies by office).
- Police Services in Tainan The Tainan City Police Department handles public safety, criminal reports, and traffic incidents. Dial 110 to report crime, seek protection, or ask for assistance from police. Police stations throughout Tainan can also help if you’re lost, your passport is missing, or you have other safety concerns.
- Fire, Rescue, Ambulance Services: The Tainan City Fire Bureau provides firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services. Firefighters and EMTs respond when you dial 119 for fire outbreaks, accidents, serious injuries, or if you need an ambulance.
Tainan’s fire service divisions operate city-wide and are part of Taiwan’s broader National Fire Agency network, ensuring coordinated disaster and rescue operations.
Tip: When calling 119, try to clearly give your location, what happened, and how many people are involved to help dispatch crews quickly. - Hospitals and Emergency Medical Care: While ambulance services are reached via 119, once medical responders arrive, they typically take you to an appropriate hospital emergency department. In Tainan, major hospitals include: National Cheng Kung University Hospital; Tainan Hospital; Sin Lau Christian Hospital. These provide emergency and trauma care services.
- Other Useful Hotlines in Taiwan
- Outside of core emergency services, Taiwan also offers additional nationwide hotlines that can be useful in related situations:
- 113 – Domestic violence/child protection support
- 165 – Anti-fraud reporting and advice
- 118 – Maritime emergencies (coast guard)
- 1999 – Government services inquiries
- What to Keep in Mind
- Emergency numbers are free to dial and available 24/7.
- Dispatchers may initially speak Mandarin only; using simple English phrases or asking for the “English operator” can help.
- Taiwan’s emergency response system is generally efficient, and ambulances and firefighters respond quickly when needed.

- “Getting to” Tainan – 如何前往台南
- There are several options for traveling to Tainan depending on where you are starting your trip, what is the preferred mode of travel, and how much time is available to make the journey.
- Getting to Tainan by Air: The most convenient option for international visitors is to
fly into Taipei (TPE) or Kaohsiung (KHH), then take to Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) to Tainan. Flights are also available to Tainan Airport (TNN). Tainan has a small airport with limited international flights. If you find a direct flight, you can land at Tainan Airport & take a taxi or bus about 15–20 minutes to the city center.
- Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) is approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Tainan. From KHH, take the Kaohsiung MRT (metro) to the Zuoying HSR Station, then take the High Speed Rail (HSR) to Tainan. The trip on HSR will take about 15–20 minutes. An alternative is to take the regular train from Kaohsiung Railway Station about 35–50 minutes.. The regular train will stop at the Tainan Main Station which is downtown. The THSR station is adjacent to the downtown urban area, and a taxi ride or a 30-40 minute ride on the Shalun Railway spur will be required to reach the downtown urban area from the THSR station at Tainan. In addition to the choices of THSR or legacy rail, it is also possible to travel from KHH by car or taxi. The ride will take 50-60 minutes.
- From Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE, Taipei), take the THSR from Taoyuan → Tainan. To do this, take the shuttle bus or train from TPE to the Taoyuan HSR Station, then the High Speed Rail to Tainan HSR Station. The THSR trip will take around 90 minutes with trains running frequently (every 20-30 minutes). Another alternative is to take the regular legacy train, which will require a trip from TPE to downtown Taipei to the Taipei Main Station, then a trip on the legacy TRA train for a 4-5 hour journey to Tainan.
- Getting to Tainan By Rail: Take the Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) from Taipei, Taichung, or Kaohsiung. The trip Taipei → Tainan is about 1 hour 40 minutes. From Taichung → Tainan is about 50 minutes. From Kaohsiung (Zuoying) → Tainan is about 20 minutes. The HSR Tainan Station is in Gueiren District, about 20 minutes by shuttle bus, rail spur, or taxi from central Tainan.
- The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) offers legacy train services from Taipei or Kaohsiung to Tainan. The journey from Kaohsiung to Tainan takes between 40 – 75 minutes depending on whether the ticket is for a train offering “regular” or “express” service. Regular trains stop at Tainan Railway Station (in the city center). The journey on TRA from Taipei → Tainan is about 4–5 hours.
- Getting to Tainan by Car: Tainan is accessible via National Freeway 1 (Sun Yat-sen Freeway) or Freeway 3. Drive times from Taipei is ~3.5–4.5 hours. From Taichung is about 2 hours. From Kaohsiung is about 1 hour.
- Getting to Tainan by Intercity Bus: Companies like Ubus, Kuo-Kuang & Ho-Hsin offer service to Tainan from Taipei, Taichung & Kaohsiung.

- Road system in Tainan – 台南道路攻略
- Tainan has a well-developed road system that integrates modern expressways with traditional urban streets. Tainan’s urban roads are characterized by a grid-like layout, especially in the older districts, facilitating navigation. However, some areas, particularly the historic center, feature narrow streets that can become congested during peak hours. To address traffic congestion, especially in the old town area, Tainan has implemented a regional “smart traffic management” dynamic traffic signal system. This system utilizes real-time data to adjust traffic signals, improving traffic flow in congested zones. A project is underway to develop a beltway around the metropolitan area to alleviate traffic congestion. This new road network is designed to improve connectivity between districts and will reduce urban traffic bottlenecks.
- Tainan is served by National Highways No. 1 and No. 3, which are part of Taiwan’s primary freeway system. These highways connect Tainan to other major cities like Taipei and Kaohsiung, facilitating efficient long-distance travel. Provincial Highways No. 1 and No. 17 are significant routes within Tainan. Provincial Highway No. 1 runs along the western coast, connecting Tainan to other cities, while Provincial Highway No. 17 provides access to the Anping area and the Tainan Airport.
- Provincial Highway No. 20 “Southern Cross-Island Highway” is a scenic route that begins in central Tainan and traverses the island’s central mountain range, reaching Taitung on the east coast. It’s renowned for its picturesque landscapes & is a popular route for travelers seeking natural beauty.
