THE SAKIZAYA PEOPLE- 撒奇萊雅族
- The Sakizaya People are one of the officially recognized Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan, with a history marked by resilience, cultural revival, and late political recognition. Chinese name: 撒奇萊雅族. Official recognition: 2007 (Taiwan’s 13th recognized Indigenous group). Primary location: Hualien County, especially around the Hualien Plain. Language: Sakizaya (Austronesian family; closely related to Amis)
- For centuries, the Sakizaya lived on the eastern plains of Taiwan. A pivotal event in their history was the Takobowan Incident (1878), when Sakizaya communities joined with the Kavalan people to resist Qing Dynasty forces. After their defeat, many Sakizaya people concealed their identity, registering themselves as Amis to survive persecution.
Because of this, the Sakizaya were long considered a subgroup of the Amis rather than a distinct people. Through decades of activism, historical research, and cultural documentation, they succeeded in gaining official recognition in 2007. - Social structure: Traditionally matrilineal, similar to the Amis. Livelihoods: Farming (rice, taro), fishing, and gathering. Dress & crafts: Distinctive embroidery and ceremonial attire, especially for rituals. Music & dance: Choral singing and ritual dances play an important role in ceremonies
- Sakizaya spiritual life centers on ancestor worship and nature spirits. Important Ritual: Palamal Festival A major annual ceremony honoring ancestors and remembering those who died in historic conflicts, especially the Takobowan Incident. It is both a spiritual ritual and an act of historical remembrance.
- The Sakizaya language was once endangered due to assimilation. Revitalization efforts inclue School instruction Documentation by linguists and cultural organizations
- Today, Sakizaya people actively work to: Revive traditional rituals and language Assert land and cultural rights Educate younger generations about Sakizaya identity Share their history with broader Taiwanese society Their recognition is often cited as an important example of Indigenous identity recovery in Taiwan.
