The northern region features the Datun Volcano Group, featuring volcanic rock types like dacite, andesite, and basalt. The region was formed around 10 to 8 million years ago by the collision between the Philippine Sea Plate and Eurasian Plate, leading to folding, faulting, and mountain building,The basin area in the city’s center was formerly a coastal area that underwent tectonic deformation and subsequently collapsed to form a half-graben, which is now filled with younger quaternary sediments.

  • New Taipei Metropolitan Park (新北大都會公園) is the largest urban park in northern Taiwan, spanning 424 hectares along the Erchong Floodway in the Sanchong and Wugu districts. It is approximately three times the size of London’s Hyde Park and serves both as a massive recreational green space and a critical flood prevention infrastructure. 

  • Bitan Scenic Area (碧潭風景區) is a popular riverside destination in New Taipei City, Taiwan, known for its iconic suspension bridge, “Little Chibi” cliffs, and family-friendly water activities. Located at the southern terminal of the MRT Green Line (Xindian Station), it offers a peaceful escape from the city with a mix of nature, dining, and historical charm.

  • Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf is a scenic, romantic waterfront destination in New Taipei City, renowned for its stunning sunset views over the Tamsui River. Key highlights include the iconic Lovers’ Bridge, a 300-meter wooden boardwalk, fresh seafood, a tourist fish market & ferries to Tamsui Old Street.

  • Yehliu Geopark (野柳地質公園) is a coastal promontory in the Wanli District of New Taipei City. The park’s most iconic landmark is the “Queen’s Head”, a rock formation resembling the profile of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti.

  • Shifen Waterfall Park (十分瀑布) is often called the “Niagara Falls of Taiwan”. The park presents the broadest waterfall in the country at 40 meters (131 feet) wide. The park is located in the Pingxi District of New Taipei City and is famous for the rainbows that frequently appear in its mist on sunny days.

  • Manyueyuan National Forest Recreation Area (滿月圓國家森林遊樂區) is a lush sanctuary in New Taipei City’s Sanxia District, famously dubbed a “Waterfall Paradise”. Situated at the edge of the Snow Mountain Range, it offers a refreshing escape with high concentrations of negative ions, dense forests of Japanese cedar and red maple & a network of well-maintained hiking trails suitable for various skill levels.

  • Neidong National Forest Recreation Area ( 內洞國家森林遊樂區) also known as “Wawa Valley” (Baby Valley) for its abundant frog population, is a lush natural escape in the Wulai District of New Taipei City. It is famous for its three-tiered waterfall and high concentration of negative ions, which are believed to have health benefits. The negative ion content is the highest among all forest recreation areas in Taiwan. It has a rich fern ecosystem , and convenient transportation from Taipei, making it a popular forest bathing destination near Taipei.

  • Teresa Teng Memorial Park (also known as Yun Garden) is the final resting place and a dedicated tribute to the legendary Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng. Located within the serene Chin Pao San (Jinbao Mountain) Cemetery in the Jinshan District of New Taipei City, the park offers fans a peaceful environment to pay their respects while enjoying panoramic views of the North Coast and Pacific Ocean.

  • Lin Family Mansion and Garden (also known as the Banqiao Lin Family Garden) is Taiwan’s most complete and best-preserved example of traditional Chinese garden architecture. Located in the Banqiao District of New Taipei City, this 4.9-acre (20,000-square-meter) estate was built in the mid-19th century by the Lin Ben Yuan family, once the wealthiest and most powerful clan in Taiwan.

  • Yangmingshan National Park is Taiwan’s only national park featuring volcanic geography and is located just north of Taipei. Known as the “urban forest” of Taipei, it is famous for its hot springs, sulfur deposits, seasonal flower festivals, and extensive hiking trails.

  • The Tamsui River (淡水河) is the main river flowing through New Taipei City, serving as a vital waterway for northern Taiwan. Its major tributaries include the Dahan River, Xindian River, and Keelung River, which drain the surrounding mountainous terrain and flow through the Taipei Basin before reaching the Taiwan Strait.   • Keelung River (基隆河) is a major waterway in northern Taiwan, stretching approximately 86 km (53 miles) through New Taipei City, Keelung City, and Taipei City.   • The Beishi River (北勢溪) is a 50-kilometer (31 mi) long river located in northern Taiwan. It is a major tributary of the Xindian River and plays a vital role as the primary water source for the Feicui Reservoir, which supplies daily water to the Greater Taipei area.

  • The Nanshi River (南勢溪) is a 45 km (28 mi) river that flows through the Wulai District & Xindian District of New Taipei City. It is famously renowned as the “mother river” of the Wulai District, where it passes through mountainous terrain and feeds the famous Wulai Waterfall. It is famous for its turquoise waters, scenic hiking trails, and the nearby Atayal Indigenous hot spring culture.
  • Sanxia River (三峽河) is a 28.5-kilometer-long tributary of the Dahan River in New Taipei City, Taiwan, flowing through the Sanxia, Tucheng, and Shulin districts. Known for its scenic mountain streams, it offers popular recreation spots, including the nearby Manyueyuan National Forest Recreation Area.
