GEOLOGY – 地 質

( moeacgs.gov.tw )
- Geology of New Taipei City – 新北市文化中地質的角色
- New Taipei City’s geology is dominated by Miocene sedimentary rocks, including sandstone and shale, with notable volcanic activity from the Datun Volcano Group in the north. The region was shaped by the collision of the Philippine Sea and Eurasian plates, resulting in rugged mountains, intense coastal weathering (Yehliu Geopark), and mineral-rich volcanic intrusions. The area is divided into older strata (north of Keelung River) and younger strata (south of Keelung River), consisting largely of Miocene-aged sandstone, shale, and coal seams. The northern region features the Datun Volcano Group, featuring volcanic rock types like dacite, andesite, and basalt. The region was formed around 10 to 8 million years ago by the collision between the Philippine Sea Plate and Eurasian Plate, leading to folding, faulting, and mountain building,The basin area in the city’s center was formerly a coastal area that underwent tectonic deformation and subsequently collapsed to form a half-graben, which is now filled with younger quaternary sediments.
