  • Languages spoken in Changhua are primarily: (i.) Mandarin Chinese which is the “official” language & is used in government, media & schools; (ii.) Taiwanese Hokkien which is widely spoken locally particularly in rural or older communities; (iii.) Hakka which is spoken by the Hakka minority population, though less dominant than Hokkien in this region; (iv.) Formosan Indigenous Languages spoken by a very small fraction of the population; and (v.) English which is studied in schools & Japanese which is known by the older generations. Changhua has a very strong local culture, ensuring that while Mandarin is universal, Taiwanese Hokkien is the predominant language in everyday interpersonal interactions. While Mandarin serves as the lingua franca, Hokkien remains very popular in central Taiwan, making most residents bilingual.

  • Changhua is primarily inhabited by: (i.) Han Chinese – the major Han Group is Hoklo/Minnan which comprise the largest portion of the population & settled in the region during the Ming & Qing dynasties; (ii.) Hakka settled in areas like Erlin, Zhutang & Pitou townships & form a notable presence in the local wine industry; and (iii.) Plains Indigenous Peoples ( “Pingpu” ). Historically Changhua was home to the Babuza & Hoanya tribes of the Plains Indigenous ( “Pingpu” ) People. The Babuza People historically inhabited the coastal areas & what is now “Changhua City” which was formerly known as “Bamboo Town”. The Hoanya is a Plains Indigenous Group that inhabited the Central Coastal Plains of the western portion of the Island of Taiwan, including parts of Changhua. The Arikun People are a subgroup of the Hoanya & are found in the Changhua & Taichung areas.
