New Taipei City has a municipal ordinance requiring the protection of “valuable” trees that are more than 50 years old, have cultural, historic or scientific value, or whose girth exceeds 90cm as measured 1.3m above the ground. More than 1,000 trees have earned the “protected” status. Protective barriers, shown in the photo, are installed to help protect designated trees. (taipeitimes.com).
